I have photographed several newborns since I started my photography career almost ten years ago. The amount of training and keeping up on new trends, new poses, and ideas is constantly evolving, as am I. I recently took a newborn photography course that was completely eye opening to me. For all the years that I have been photographing babies, I have been spending so much time trying to get those babies nice and sleepy so I could do the traditional newborn poses...you know the ones; the tushy up pose, hands under chin, froggy pose, baby laying on side. If those babies are not fully asleep, those poses do not work.
The course I just took blew my mind at the thought of just going with the flow. If the baby is awake, great! What new mama doesn't love seeing her wide eyed baby staring right into the camera? So, that is my new approach...going with the flow. If the baby does not want to sleep, or does not want to lay in a certain pose, I am not going to work and work for sometimes close to an hour just to get that traditional pose. As you can see by the images I posted below, Baby Allison was content the entire session. I wrapped her up tight, and she slept most of her session, but there was a portion where she wanted to be awake, and I went with it. I feel this new approach has not only made my galleries more diverse, but it has allowed me to share a little bit more of my artistry, and that makes my heart happy!
Here are just a few of my favorite images from sweet Allison's newborn session. Her big sis wanted a picture of just herself too, so of course I said yes! If you are looking into newborn portraits, please send me a message. I adore my job and all the babies that I get to photograph along the way!
